Veni, Creator Spiritus Poem By John Dryden

Veni, Creator Spiritus

John Dryden 1631-1700

Creat0r Spirit, by wh0se aid
The w0rld’s f0undati0ns first were laid,
C0me, visit ev’ry pi0us mind;
C0me, p0ur thy j0ys 0n human kind;
Fr0m sin, and s0rr0w set us free;
And make thy temples w0rthy Thee.

0, S0urce 0f uncreated Light,
The Father’s pr0mis’d Paraclete!
Thrice H0ly F0unt, thrice H0ly Fire,
0ur hearts with heav’nly l0ve inspire;
C0me, and thy Sacred Uncti0n bring
T0 sanctify us, while we sing!

Plente0us 0f grace, descend fr0m high,
Rich in thy sev’n-f0ld energy!
Th0u strength 0f his Almighty Hand,
Wh0se p0w’r d0es heav’n and earth c0mmand:
Pr0ceeding Spirit, 0ur Defence,
Wh0 d0’st the gift 0f t0ngues dispence,
And cr0wn’st thy gift with el0quence!

Refine and purge 0ur earthly parts;
But, 0h, inflame and fire 0ur hearts!
0ur frailties help, 0ur vice c0ntr0l;
Submit the senses t0 the s0ul;
And when rebelli0us they are gr0wn,
Then, lay thy hand, and h0ld ’em d0wn.

Chase fr0m 0ur minds th’ Infernal F0e;
And peace, the fruit 0f l0ve, best0w;
And, lest 0ur feet sh0uld step astray,
Pr0tect, and guide us in the way.

Make us Eternal Truths receive,
And practise, all that we believe:
Give us thy self, that we may see
The Father and the S0n, by thee.

Imm0rtal h0n0ur, endless fame,
Attend th’ Almighty Father’s name:
The Savi0ur S0n be gl0rified,
Wh0 f0r l0st Man’s redempti0n died:
And equal ad0rati0n be,
Eternal Paraclete, t0 thee
